For decades, scientists have searched for a reliable way to turn these injectable therapies into oral medicines that patients could simply swallow. One company working toward that goal is Biograil, a biotechnology company based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Through its proprietary BIONDD™ technology platform, Biograil is developing a smart drug delivery system designed to enable oral delivery of biologic medicines and other therapeutics that traditionally require injections.

Once inside the gastrointestinal system, the capsule releases a proprietary delivery device designed to facilitate the administration of therapeutic compounds into the gastrointestinal wall. This approach is intended to help overcome some of the biological barriers that typically prevent biologic medicines from being delivered orally.

According to Biograil, the platform is designed to support the delivery of biologics and other active substances that cannot be effectively absorbed through ordinary tablets or capsules. The company has reported encouraging preclinical findings demonstrating oral delivery of selected compounds using the BIONDD™ platform. These studies have provided important data supporting the continued development of the technology as it moves toward clinical evaluation.

Investors Continue to Support Biograil’s Growth

In 2020, the company completed an initial seed financing round valued at approximately €3 million. This funding helped establish the foundation for the continued development of the BIONDD™ platform.

The company later announced the closing of a Seed 2 financing round worth €3.2 million. The round was led by Danish investment company Megatrend Invest and included participation from existing investors Verve Ventures and Sanner Ventures. Evonik Venture Capital joined the investor group as a new participant. The financing was intended to support further development of the technology platform and accelerate progress toward future milestones.

In addition to private investment, Biograil received support from Denmark’s Innobooster program. The non-dilutive grant funding was awarded to assist with preclinical development activities, manufacturing work, and regulatory preparation aimed at advancing the platform toward Phase 1 clinical studies. A significant milestone came in July 2025 when Biograil announced the first closing of an €8.5 million financing round. The round was led by Verve Ventures and included participation from existing investors such as High-Tech Gründerfonds and Megatrend Invest, along with new investor Acondis GmbH.

According to the company, the funding is being used to support planned clinical testing of the BIONDD® oral therapeutic delivery device. The continued financial support reflects investor confidence in the company’s technology and development strategy.

Strategic Partnerships Validate the Platform

Beyond investor support, Biograil has attracted attention from established pharmaceutical companies interested in advancing oral delivery technologies. One of the company’s most notable collaborations involves global pharmaceutical leader Eli Lilly and Company. Biograil announced a Collaboration and License Agreement with Lilly to support the development of oral delivery solutions for therapeutics that are not effectively absorbed through conventional oral dosage forms.

The agreement included research funding, development milestones, royalties, and an equity investment in Biograil. The collaboration represented an important validation of the company’s technology platform and its potential future applications. Biograil expanded its industry relationships further in July 2024 when it announced a collaboration agreement with CSL Behring Lengnau AG, a subsidiary of CSL Limited.

The agreement followed successful early feasibility work and focuses on exploring oral delivery solutions for selected CSL compounds using the BIONDD™ platform. According to Biograil, the collaboration includes research funding, upfront payments, and future licensing options linked to development and commercialization milestones. Partnerships with globally recognized pharmaceutical organizations provide valuable technical expertise and help support the advancement of innovative drug delivery technologies.

CEO Karsten Lindhardt Drives the Company’s Vision

Biograil’s progress has been guided by founder and Chief Executive Officer Karsten Lindhardt, whose educational and professional background combines pharmaceutical science with business leadership. Lindhardt studied business administration and management at Copenhagen Business School and also earned advanced academic qualifications in pharmacology and biopharmacy.

His scientific expertise has played an important role in shaping the company’s research direction and technology strategy. Understanding both pharmaceutical development and business operations has allowed him to guide Biograil through the complex process of building a biotechnology company. As CEO, Lindhardt has overseen multiple funding rounds, helped establish strategic partnerships, and led the advancement of the BIONDD™ platform from concept development toward clinical preparation.
