Developing new treatments for rare diseases often takes years of research, scientific innovation, and strong financial support. For patients living with mitochondrial diseases, treatment options remain limited, making every advancement in the field significant. Adjuvia Therapeutics is taking another step toward addressing this unmet medical need after securing fresh investment to move its lead therapy closer to human clinical testing.

Funding to Support Clinical MilestonesATI-105 Targets Mitochondrial DysfunctionAddressing an Unmet Medical NeedA Step Forward for the Company

Adjuvia Therapeutics, a biotechnology company based in San Francisco, has raised $8 million in seed funding to advance its lead drug candidate, ATI-105, into clinical development. The financing round was led by JLO Ventures, with participation from Portfolia Ventures. The investment will help the company prepare its Investigational New Drug (IND) application and begin the next phase of its development programme.

Funding to Support Clinical Milestones

The newly raised capital will be used to support the submission of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application for ATI-105 and initiate a Phase 1 clinical trial in healthy volunteers, which the company expects to begin in Fall 2026.

Following the Phase 1 study, Adjuvia plans to launch a Phase 1/2 clinical trial in patients with Friedreich’s ataxia in early 2027, subject to regulatory approval. The funding will also strengthen the company’s research and operational activities as it prepares for these important clinical milestones.

Moving a therapy from laboratory research into human testing is a critical stage in drug development. It allows researchers to evaluate the safety of a new treatment before studying its effectiveness in patients.

ATI-105 Targets Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Adjuvia Therapeutics is developing medicines designed to address mitochondrial dysfunction, a condition that affects the body’s ability to produce energy at the cellular level. Mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to several rare genetic disorders as well as many chronic diseases.

The company’s lead candidate, ATI-105, is being developed initially for Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare inherited disease that progressively damages the nervous system and affects movement, coordination, and heart function.

According to Adjuvia Therapeutics, ATI-105 is a proprietary nanoparticle formulation of astaxanthin, a naturally occurring antioxidant. The company says the therapy is designed to improve the delivery of the compound to cells and mitochondria, where it is intended to help reduce oxidative stress and support mitochondrial function. These proposed benefits will need to be confirmed through clinical studies.

Addressing an Unmet Medical Need

Mitochondrial diseases are often difficult to treat because they affect the body’s ability to generate the energy needed for normal cell function. Patients may experience symptoms involving the muscles, nervous system, heart, and other organs, and available treatment options remain limited.

By focusing on therapies that target mitochondrial dysfunction, Adjuvia aims to develop treatments that address the underlying biological causes of these diseases rather than simply managing symptoms. The company’s research is centred on improving outcomes for patients with rare mitochondrial disorders.

A Step Forward for the Company

The successful seed funding round provides Adjuvia Therapeutics with the financial resources needed to move ATI-105 into clinical testing. Reaching the clinical stage is an important milestone for any biotechnology company and reflects growing investor confidence in its scientific approach.

With support from JLO Ventures and Portfolia Ventures, Adjuvia is now preparing for its planned IND submission and Phase 1 clinical trial later this year. While ATI-105 must still complete clinical studies to establish its safety and effectiveness, the latest funding marks meaningful progress in the company’s mission to develop new treatment options for people living with rare mitochondrial diseases.

As research into mitochondrial medicine continues to advance, Adjuvia Therapeutics is positioning itself to contribute to the development of innovative therapies for conditions that currently have limited treatment options. The company’s next clinical milestones will be closely watched by investors, researchers, and the rare disease community alike.
