Every second counts when a patient bleeds severely on an operating table or during childbirth. Historically, doctors faced a dangerous guessing game. Standard laboratory blood tests can take up to an hour to return results. In an emergency, clinicians cannot afford to wait. They must decide immediately whether to transfuse whole blood, platelets, or specific clotting factors. This lack of real-time data often leads to unnecessary transfusions, which strain shrinking hospital budgets and burn through critical community blood supplies.

The stakes are highest in labor and delivery rooms. Postpartum hemorrhage, or severe bleeding after childbirth, remains the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Without precise information at the point of care, doctors face an agonizing choice: under-treat and risk a patient’s life, or over-transfuse and trigger severe complications. The medical world has long searched for a way to look directly into a patient’s blood, diagnose clotting problems in real time, and deliver highly targeted therapy exactly when it matters most.

The Flaws of Traditional Testing

To understand why acute bleeding is so difficult to manage, one must look at how hospitals track clotting. The biological process of stopping blood flow, known as hemostasis, relies on a delicate balance of platelets, fibrinogen, and other clotting factors. When a patient bleeds heavily during major surgery or trauma, this balance shatters.

Traditional tests like Prothrombin Time (PT) or International Normalized Ratio (INR) only provide a partial view. They measure how long it takes for a chemical reaction to start, but they do not show the mechanical strength of the clot itself.

Older viscoelastic testing methods attempt to measure clot strength by placing a blood sample in a small cup and inserting a mechanical pin or wire. As the blood clots, the machine measures the physical drag on the pin. While helpful, these systems are highly sensitive to external movement and floor vibrations. They require precise manual pipetting, meticulous cleaning, and extensive training to avoid user errors. Because these mechanical systems are complicated and fragile, they often remain confined to central laboratories rather than being placed directly inside a hectic operating room or trauma bay.

A Leader Defined by Purpose and Experience

Solving this clinical bottleneck requires a distinct blend of deep industry experience and purpose-driven leadership. Robert A. “Bob” Roda took the helm as President and CEO of HemoSonics in February 2020. Roda did not follow a conventional corporate path into medical technology. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Rhode Island before completing postgraduate coursework at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. This economic foundation shaped his understanding of how medical innovations must balance patient care with hospital efficiency.

Before joining HemoSonics, Roda built a distinguished 25-year career commercializing global diagnostic and medical device products. He spent more than a decade at Johnson & Johnson, ascending to the role of Worldwide Vice President of Marketing in Immunohematology, Donor Screening, and Clinical Laboratories at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics.

Later, he served as Vice President and General Manager at Becton Dickinson, leading their medical and procedural solutions business in the United States. Directly before taking the reins at HemoSonics, he served as President and CEO of Menarini Silicon Biosystems, a diagnostic and biotech firm specializing in predictive tests for cancer patients. Roda stepped into his role at HemoSonics with a clear vision: to transform acute bleeding management from a reactive guessing game into an exact science.

Transforming Empathy into Better Healthcare

Roda’s transition from macroeconomics to the frontlines of medical technology was driven by a deep personal conviction. Throughout his career, he realized that true professional fulfillment comes from making a tangible difference in human lives. He saw firsthand how slow diagnostics delayed critical treatments, leaving doctors frustrated and putting families through avoidable grief.

This empathy shifted his focus from tracking corporate metrics to empowering the medical community. Roda views medical technology not just as a business, but as a direct responsibility to improve patient care.

When he discovered the underlying technology behind HemoSonics, he recognized an opportunity to address a massive, systemic flaw in global healthcare. His motivation stems from a desire to eliminate guesswork in critical care settings, ensuring that no patient suffers or dies simply because a doctor had to wait too long for a lab report.

Engineering the Sound of Coagulation

Under Roda’s leadership, HemoSonics advanced its flagship innovation: the Quantra Hemostasis System. Developed in Durham, North Carolina, the Quantra platform reimagines how clinicians evaluate blood clotting. Instead of using mechanical pins or wires that can break weak clots, the system relies on a patented technology called Sonic Estimation of Elasticity via Resonance (SEER) sonorheometry.

The technology works by using ultrasound waves. The system sends high-frequency ultrasound pulses into a whole blood sample, creating a gentle acoustic force that nudges the blood and causes it to vibrate at its resonance frequency. As the blood coagulates and forms a clot, its physical stiffness increases, which changes the frequency of the vibration. The instrument tracks these tiny shifts by measuring the time delays of returning ultrasound echoes.

This process calculates the direct shear modulus of elasticity, providing a clean metric of clot stiffness expressed in absolute units of hectopascals. Because the technology uses ultrasound waves, it requires zero physical contact with the blood sample. This non-invasive approach leaves early clot formations entirely undisturbed, making the system incredibly sensitive to the weak, soft clots common in bleeding patients.

The Quantra Analyzer packages this complex physics into a fully automated, sealed cartridge-based system. A clinician simply draws blood into a standard blue-top tube, inserts it directly into the cartridge slot at the front, and presses a button. The system handles all fluidics, warming, and testing internally without any manual pipetting or open blood exposure.

Within 15 minutes or less, the system displays results on an intuitive, color-coded dial screen, as shown on the interface. Crucially, the Quantra QPlus Cartridge is the only system that directly breaks down the specific contributions of both platelets and fibrinogen to total clot stiffness on a single panel. This clear display tells doctors exactly what component the patient lacks, completely removing the guesswork from targeted transfusion therapies.

Navigating a Global Crisis

Roda’s tenure at HemoSonics began at a turning point in modern history. Weeks after he assumed the CEO role in February 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global healthcare. The pandemic strained hospital resources and triggered severe, long-lasting shortages in community blood donations. Managing blood resources efficiently transformed overnight from a financial ideal into an absolute medical emergency.

Roda had to guide his team through regulatory pathways and hospital disruptions while scaling manufacturing. The company focused on proving that the Quantra System could protect precious blood supplies.

By delivering rapid results directly in critical care areas, the device allowed hospitals to practice strict Patient Blood Management (PBM). Clinicians could confidently withhold unnecessary transfusions, saving scarce blood products for patients in dire need. This clear utility helped HemoSonics expand its clinical footprint despite global supply chain hurdles.

Expanding Care for Mothers Worldwide

A major validation for the clinical potential of the technology occurred on October 21, 2024, when HemoSonics was awarded a $525,000 grand prize in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) RADx Tech for Maternal Health Challenge. This initiative targeted the development of innovative diagnostic tools to combat maternal mortality.

This research and validation paved the way for the company’s largest regulatory milestone in maternal care: on September 25, 2025, HemoSonics officially received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the use of its Quantra Hemostasis System with the QStat Cartridge to include peripartum obstetric procedures. This made Quantra the first and only cartridge-based viscoelastic testing platform formally cleared by the FDA for obstetric bleeding.

The momentum from this expansion continued to grow rapidly. On May 5, 2026, the system won the Silver Award at the prestigious Edison Awards in the Women’s Health and Reproductive Innovations category. By placing these rapid diagnostic tools directly into labor and delivery suites, HemoSonics gave obstetric teams the ability to diagnose and manage postpartum hemorrhage in real time against pregnancy-specific reference ranges, saving women’s lives during childbirth.

The Chameleon Approach to Leadership

Roda’s management philosophy centers on presence, humility, and clear communication. He often describes effective leadership as behaving like a “chameleon.” This does not mean shifting one’s core values; rather, it means adapting communication styles to connect authentically with different audiences. Roda balances interactions across a diverse ecosystem: he speaks with highly technical engineers and clinical scientists in one hour, and transitions to discussing financial efficiency with hospital administrators, investors, or frontline nurses in the next.

He believes that a great leader must remain vulnerable and open to being humbled by new information. Rather than focusing solely on end results or financial milestones, Roda encourages his teams to value the collective journey, embracing both daily triumphs and failures as essential steps toward meaningful innovation. This cultural focus keeps the organization closely aligned with its ultimate medical purpose.

Redefining Critical Care Standards

The future of HemoSonics points toward widespread clinical adoption and ongoing technological evolution. With clearances spanning cardiovascular surgeries, major orthopedic procedures, trauma care, liver transplantations, and peripartum obstetrics, the Quantra System holds the broadest range of clinical indications of any cartridge-based whole blood hemostasis analyzer on the market.

Roda’s ongoing strategy focuses on integrating these point-of-care devices into standardized hospital hemorrhage protocols worldwide. By linking rapid diagnostic data with clear, hospital-wide care pathways, HemoSonics aims to establish a new global standard for acute bleeding management.

As the platform integrates deeper into hospital IT infrastructures and remote-access systems, care teams can monitor a patient’s coagulation status from anywhere in the facility. Under Roda’s guidance, HemoSonics continues to prove that listening to the acoustic resonance of blood can save lives, optimize hospital economics, and deliver precision medicine to patients when every second counts.
